    I think you may be getting questionable advice at best. Many many reef hobbyists and professionals alike have a much different opinion and have scientific evidence to back it up. Bioballs do not support the anaerobic bacteria needed for complete nitrification denitrification like other porous medias support. Do some research before you make up your mind.

    Yes, do some extensive research. You will soon learn that, just like any other facet in the SW hobby, there are plenty of experts, scientists, and hobbyists that will support both sides of any argument, with each one packing enough "evidence" to make one wonder if any of them know what they are talking about. In the end, what you use will be a personal choice, and proper maintenance will be the key to your success.

    I will concede, however, that if you have live sand and/or live rock in your system, then adding any other bio-media will be a moot point; You already have the best biological filter available, and you'll only be adding to your maintenance list.
