    That's a rock boring urchin. That is why you haven't seen it. You probably won't see it again for a while.

    Probably Echinometra sp.

    So would you say this is a good or bad thing to have in a reef tank?

    They are fine. They don't hurt anything. In fact, given enough time, they'll create homes for blennies and gobies and such in the rock. They'll also stir the sand in your substrate.

    I got one on my rocks too.He is a couple years old now.I was told to watch for little trails on my corals.But I havent ever had any problems.So he gets what he needs in my well fed tank.

    Well that is good to know. I hope he does well. He is so small I hardly ever see him. I also never really see my mandarin, but she is tiny! ;D
