Unfortunately, the snow storm of a couple weeks ago wiped out most of my fish in my 90 gallon reef due to a generator failure. I'm left with a yellow tang, a christmas wrasse, one blue-green chromis, and a starry blenny, as well as a clown goby and a green band goby. Because of this, there is a pretty good amount of space, and I want to add one bigger fish, since I kind of like the calmed down look, but its a little desolate right now. Given this, I'm thinking about a blue jaw trigger, a powder brown or mimic tang, maybe a fiji foxface. Any ideas along these lines?

my opinion is take a look at a maldives lyretail anthias, i got one and it just looks great....they have a max size of 5 inches but usually around 3.75-4.0 inches and can be kept either single or in a harem(1 male and a bunch of females) the male must be larger than the females though since they are hermaphrodites and females will change...you could do 1 male 3 females or try and mix it up...ive heard of people having done well with just 1 of each i guess its just the luck of the roll

mine looks great in my tank and is always constantly out and i have seen a difference in activity with the rest of my tank she has brought everyone out and made them more active.

The anthias are gorgeous. I've always wanted a powder brown, so I'm tempted to go that direction, but I'm still not sure. I know they're awfully sensitive fish. Plus, I already have a yellow tang, and its only a 90. I think I could get away with two tangs in a 90 if there are only four fish, but it might be smarter to go with a Kole or another ctenochaetus tang since they're smaller.

I'm very tempted to go with a powder brown, but I'm thinking I may go with a kole. 90 seems to be the bare minimum for one of them and most recommend a larger tank, but I've also read that people have had success with them in a 90, so I'm torn.

well heres a question to think about....is there any local reef clubs near by? are you willing to sell/trade it away if things arent looking well? alot of people are against the whole getting rid of a fish when it outgrows the tank but some people have had a lot of success with tangs and other fish in smaller tanks...everyone has their right to an opinion but how can you tell if a fish is happy? as long as hes fat and eating and colored up properly id say hes good to go....if you see any of these 3 things starting to go you may want to be able to find him a new home quickly(hence the locaal reef clubs) id say if you wan the powder brown that bad get him and feel it out....(i understand lfs tanks arent permanent homes and should not be treated like that) with that note being said...a fish could survive in a tank of that size for a period of time where you could test to see if he is suitable for that tank without stressing him too much....ive seen an lfs hold an 8" tang in a 20 gallon tank for 3 weeks without any serious signs of distress showing yet so if you play it by year with your 90 and the fish isnt happy then just rehome him

Its a good point. I don't like getting fish that will outgrow my tank, so I don't want to have to move him in 4 or 5 years if he gets too big. I've had a yellow tang in the 90 for about 3 years and he's the healthiest looking YT I've ever seen. Also stayed pretty small, no more than 5 inches I'd say. I may go with a kole, tomini, or mimic because they seem to stay smaller and would more likely fit in a 90 for the long haul.
