starting new 20 gallon fuge, before i hook it up to the display, and add algae, whats how long should i let the new saltwater just mix with a small pump inside? ive heard rumors of freshly mixed SW, "burning" gills?? true ? not true? also have a nano lying around bieng used as fresh, i want to use it as a holding tank, whats a quick way to cycle? or any tips in tricks out there?

I dont want to use "hardy" fish, cuase its just plain mean. I was thinking more along the lines of droppin som shrimp in and letting them rott. any ideas? thank in advance.

    - boozer (everyone calls me that, and i dont even drink. im alergic to booze!) ironic.

    24 hours for the fuge

For the quarantine tank, when you do your first waterchange use the old water. Add a SMALL pinch of food once a week to continue providing food for the bacteria in it.

inwall, do you mean that for the first water change, use older water from my original tank? and add that to the new quarantine tank?

Yes, most bacteria live in a biofilm on surfaces. However, some of them are motile and swim around in the water column. Using this old water will gather bacteria for you. Add a pinch of food right away, and then periodically thereafter to feed them and you will have yourself a cycled tank very quickly.
