I have a new 90 gal reef. I have 1 long tentical and 1 african yellow anemone. Now the lights i had were not strong enough so raised them closer to the lights and they seemed to be ok. Well now I just got a hood that has 2 VHO's and 2 Metal Halides. Well now at this point it looks like they are starting to die. So i put them lower thinking to much light. But they still look like they are not doing well. Any ideas whats going on?

it could be allot of things. most of the time if it is a placement problem it will move themselves. a pic would be great. have you tested your water?

probably just the fact that it's a new and unstable tank and there shouldn't be anemones in a tank of that age. Well it's too late for all of that now so what I would do is try feeding them some krill, table shrimp, or some silversides and keep an eye on them. When anemones start to go downhill, it can get ugly and most of the time it's hard to convince them to recover. They are very touch and shouldn't be attempted by anyone without ample experience.

just put them on the bottom and leave them alone....DO NOT try to feed them as they are more than likely very stressed.....feeding will only make things worse...just put them low and lets see what happens...

Most do not need to be fed.....the light is enough....if he just made a huge change in his lighting the nem is more than likely stressed and stuffing food in his face will only make it worse.....MOST NEMS DO NOT REQUIRE A FEEDING...........thats what your lights are for....mine is fine and has been for a long time and I do not and will not feed it...Neither one of his require feedings....

really?? because I could have sworn that's why nems have stinging cells and mouths. If I don't feed my bta everyone other week he stops bubbling and starts stretching his tentacles out in search of food. I think you should probably go research this subject a little bit.

    Danny,

I 100% disagree. I'm completely with Daniel on this one. Feed that puppy. Even when it recovers, continue feeding it. If anemome's don't have clowns or cardinals pooping food right into their mouths, they should be fed. In many cases, even if they have a fish pooping into them, they should be fed.

I think what coldshot meant at first, which was the right advice, was to not try to feed the anemone while it is already stressed. That will tend to stress it out more.

Frankly, I never feed my anemones either and they have split a couple times now (went from 1 to 3 in less than a year). HOWEVER they WILL and DO eat if it is available.

But I wouldn't say their stinging cells are solely for the purpose of eating, either. It's to defend themselves as well. Lots of anemones can survive on light alone. If the light isn't good enough then that tends to be when you need to supplement them with regular feedings.
