I feel ya on the Easter thing...I was all excited to start adding some SPS under my new lighting today, and none of the stores are open...Totally forgot.

Ordinary glass is partially transparent to UVA but is opaque to shorter wavelengths while Silica or quartz glass, depending on quality, can be transparent even to vacuum UV wavelengths. Ordinary window glass passes about 90% of the light above 350 nm, but blocks over 90% of the light below 300 nm.[4][5][6]
The onset of vacuum UV, 200 nm, is defined by the fact that ordinary air is opaque at shorter wavelengths.

Good to know. Thanks. I don't think I'll turn it on today until I get the new UV glass to cover the whole thing. Try as I might, there is no way for me to cover the bulb with the existing shield.

Thanks. I will confirm and report back.

I believe all glass is UV blocking to some degree. The reason it is tempered is for safety and I believe Tempered can take the heat.

I'm wondering if you contact the manufacture if they would have a MOD from Gen 1 to Gen 2 to combat this issue

I think the lamps are pretty different but it is worth a shot J.

I did some more searching and there was a good thread on Nano Reef about UV glass:
Nano-Reef.com Forums > tempered UV shielding glass?

Sounds like I need to ask for 'green' glass.

Man this sucks. The more I look in the tank, the more damage I see from this. It is like I turned a microwave on. :p

    Sorry to hear this Matt.

When I went to a glass shop, I told them what I needed and why. He said, "I gotcha" and cut my glass for me. Unfortunately, I don't know what glass he gave me but he knew what I needed. Maybe your glass shop will know too.

I feel for you having people coming over. Back in the day when we were running 6500k's and VHO actinics to offset the yellow and turn the tank white, I had a whole bunch of people coming over. The day before the party, my VHO ballast went south. It looked like my tank was the depository of the urinals from Busch Stadium. It wasn't a blue light, it wasn't white light....it was YELLOW light. I wanted to die.

I would put in the old lights and only run them a few hours. By any chance does your reef club have a jointly owned PAR meter?

    Hi Matt,

See my post here from 2008 Warning: Coralife Aqualight Advanced Hang-On 150w HQI - Canreef Aquatics Bulletin Board

I just happened to be searching on google to see if there was any other 'uv bulbs' out on the market and saw your thread. I still have my fixture.

So, as you have found it's recommended to use tempered glass as a uv shield, in replacement of the metal grill. I have yet to find a glass shop that was able to temper a piece that small :( I hope you have better luck than me in your area!

Ugh. Thank you for the confirmation. That link explains why the the coralife bulb was fine too.

My tank was doing so well, this really has me depressed. My corals look like they were nuked. If they bounce back I will be amazed. What a curveball. I never saw it coming. :p I will be on the hunt for glass first thing in the AM.

So just tempered glass will be fine then? The Nano-Reef thread mentioned 'green' glass. Either way... that light is not going back on until I fix this.

    Thanks again.
