I just brought home a yellow tang from my LFS. I acclimated him for aprox 2 hours and added him. I have a bit of hair algae in my tank and I did see him eat a piece that was floating around but he is staying in the far left corner of my tank. Is this normal? I also added an emrald crab and he is doin great.

Sorry If this is the wrong place for this question but I'm new to 3reef.

Well, It would be nice if you explain your set up ( how big is your tank, what are the other inhabitants, and your current water parameters).

If you just added him then he might just be stressed.

I like hello tangs far more than good-bye tangs.

Also until he gets used to his new home he probably wont be as active.

    Sorry haha
    0 ammonia
    0 nitrite
    5-10 nitrate

Will do another water change once my RO system produces more water

I have a 55 (yes I know it's small but I'm buying a big tank next year) and the only other fish I have are a clown and a crab

I am newer to the hobby as well but I had the same experience when I added a yellow tang.. It was very shy at first and stayed hid mostly in one spot.. After a couple days it began trusting us and wasnt so scared to come out but still didnt like sudden movements in front of the tank.. Now after a couple months it is very comfortable, eats out of our hands and never hides.. However when people come over it doesnt know it acts funny.. Its like it knows who we are and anyone new it becomes untrusting.. Weir but true..

Good luck.. Keep a close eye on it and be patient.. Do not stress it any more than possible and allow it some time to get familiar with you and your tank..

I always recommend upgrading fish after upgrading tanks and not before. Buyiing an inappropriate fish for a small tank with the premise of upgrading later is poor husbandry and generally not a good idea. I do agree with the others who have posted that it is just acclimating and will take some time to settle in.

its normal, i just got one a couple of weeks ago for my 55 and it took him a day or so to come out and explore his new home. And 5 days before he accepted prepared food.
