for a few pounds I would contact a local fish store (LFS)

If you don't have that shop around craigslist....

for the 2-3 pounds you'd need to seed a tank, price shouldn't be as much a concern as quality and availability... $2-5 a lb on the lower side, but if you have to pay $10/lb to a local hobbyist to get them to part with some rock... that's the way it is.

Welcome to the forum, hope to see you around!

Is it really worth buying the expensive rock? Someone told me that most of the nice coraline algae etc will die during the cycle anyway, is this true?

Some may die off but some will stay. Look around for a local reef club, most of the time you can find people tearing down tanks and selling live rock for 2-3$ a lb. Or you can buy dry rock (which is what Im doing this time) from reef cleaners then buying some good live rock to seed it.

Yeah I have a lfs that sells 50lb boxes for dry rock for $60. I think that is the route I'm going to take and then just seed it with one or two pieces of live rock.
