Welcome to 3reef. If you want less husbandry I would skip on the canister filter and put in a sump. This will allow you more water volume to disapate problems and a place to put all the clutter stuff...(skimmer, heater...etc.)

i tried the "minmalist" approach and now am finding myself saving money for all the "in" things (Halides,CA reactors). I belive that going minimalist is quite difficult, but saves a load of $. Welcome and Good Luck!

    Hmmm?

I do have a sump laying around I thought about using it. Now that someone's mentioned it I will try to incorporate it. As for minimalist, I read of a guy who built a killer denitrator and had that and a very good skimmer running on on his tank for years! Don't know how valid that is, but then again how many have actually tried that? Most people just go off of what is preached from the aquaria pulpit. Most of the fun for me is figuring it out on my own. Or rather, doing what everyone else talks about. :trampolin

if your good at making things yourself i would definatly try to make some equip for your tank! but if not, like me, i would stick to brand-name stuff. If you do try to make your own skimmer, ask around here for advice because you will get help, and GOOD LUCK!!!!
