So I went to my LFS that is moving to see if there was anything good to pick up from their moving sale. I picked up a new BTA, a few snails, some live phyto, and was getting ready to pay when my honey let out a little "YEEEEE." My LFS has a little display up front with little sea horses and gave me one of those coy little smiles. I read her mind and said "ok" and picked up 2 of them. My mean little 3 stripe damsel that has been in my nano went into my 150G and the little ponies went into the nano. I figured it was time to start live cycling my 150G since it's been running bare for over a year now. I have dumped about 2,000 pods into the tank to get the live food well seeded for them. I have another 5,000 pods in reserve in my fridge for them. They are also eating frozen mysis. I've got the tank at 74º right now with a couple computer fans, but will be putting a small chiller on it to keep it stable. They will be kept alone, so we'll see how they like it. :)

It's not too confusing really. There are really just a few things to remember about sea horses to keep them healthy. They need good food, and colder water. I feed mine frozen selcon soaked mysis and have tons of pods for them to munch on all day. Depending on the breed, they will need colder water, 74ºF tops for the erectus breed. I wouldn't worry about raising phyto, worry about keeping healthy and plentiful pod cultures in the tank. :)

Awesome new additions TM. K+. I have been planning a mated pair of shallow water species for my new big system to be kept in the fuge.

That's awesome Pack. They should love it in the fuge, they will have tons of food in there! I had a mated pair of horses before, they spawned about 300 babies once, they all got sucked into the filter. :(
I lost that pair when the water got too warm and they came down with a bad bacterial infection. Now I know better, this breed needs cold water.

Is it okay to recommend a vendor on this site? A guy I got to know as a hobbyist on a seahorse site started a business a few years ago, seahorsesource. I have bought from them and been very happy. The site is informative and they will help you whether you buy from them or not. I've been keeping seahorses for the last six years. They are wonderful and do well if you meet their environmental and nutritional needs.

My male just died last night. He didn't really eat much since putting him into the tank, but the female was perfectly fine. I hope the female doesn't come down with lonliness. She didn't want to eat last night. Hopefully she snaps out of it and eat tonight. :(
