I started up a new innovative marine fusion nano yesterday. I used all water from my established 40 breeder that's been up for a year or so. I did use new sand and a nice piece of dry rock with a couple of small pieces of live rock from my established tank. I put a yellow chromis in thinking it wouldn't go through a cycle since I used mature water and some live rock from my other tank. Guess I'm going through a mini cycle. Woke up to the chromis dead and about 2.0 ppm ammonia. Nitrite and nitrate are 0. So im not sure what to do now. I know to let it cycle completely now but should I add some food every now and then to the tank ? Any tips would be great. Thanks.

My guess is that there is enough organic matter in there for a while. If wait until perameters are in check before adding anything.

Yeah no fish or inverts for a while until everything hits 0. Kind of surprised though. I've done this several times with no issues. Went from a 55 down to a 20 and then from the 20 up to a 40. Always used the same water but had all live rock. The 10 gallon nano only had one big chuck of dry rock and a couple pieces of live. Rubble rock really. The sand likely has die off too.

The sand was new. Thinking about putting a scoop full from my established tank into the nano.

Water does not contain the beneficial bacteria so using water from an established tank will do nothing to help cycle.Liverock will help but all new tanks go through a "cycle" in some degree.

I have a fist sized chunk of live rock and a couple of other small pieces and the one nice chunk of dry rock in there. Do you think that's enough live rock to get the cycle going ?

Absolutely.Just keep adding a little food every other day until ammonia and nitrite are undetectable.:)

Will do. Thanks for the advice. This tank is going to be a little zoa garden I'm thinking. Once I figure out what light I want on it. That 12 watt par38 bulb won't cut it.

After two days of the tank running I now have 0 ammonia and nitrites. Is it possible that this thing cycled in two days ? Sounds to good to be true. Had 2.0 ppm ammonia yesterday and 0 today. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1417490856.957757.jpg
