Ok, got a bluespotted jawfish last night around 5ish. Acclimated him. Very healthy looking fish as of last night. He immediately found some rubble in the sand and kind of hid behind it. I thought ok this is going to be his new home. Went out last night got home around 11, and I dont see the fish. I thought ok, he didnt like his first spot and decided to go somewhere else in the tank, probably behind the rocks. No worries go to bed.
Just got home from work. Couldnt find him spent an hour looking I was starting to get a little worried. So then I finally find him, in an oversized empty snail shell. Once I spotted him, he didnt look to hot, his mouth and lips looked off to me. So I stuck a sryinge down by him and shot some garlic soaked rods food in there. He came out of his shell and started swimming around the tank. Just kinda hopping around from place to place. It didnt look like he really ate any of the food. So I dedided to take some pics of what he looked like. Hes photogenic for sure. He was like actually posing for me. But heres some pics, hope there good enough.
Look at the lip, mouth and head area.

What have you done to your tank in order to provide him with an adequate home? Jawfish can not just live in any old tank with fine substrate (which it appears you have) and rock. You need to have a very course, fairly deep, substrate with small shells mixed in or similar so they can build a tunnel. They will not be comfortable just hiding in rock/sand.
He is probably stressed due to lack of an adequate hidey-hole. Pick up some course sand, mix it with small shells, and replace your substrate with that in a small section of the tank in an area adequate for your jawfish ;)

Yes my sand is a little finer, but there is some coral rubble mixed into it. You cant see it from it the pics, but i have a ton of small debris. I bought a bunch of pieces of broken live rock from my LFS awhile back. I had kept a pearly jawfish for quite awhile in the 75.The only reason he died is because my protein skimmer died and I couldnt replace it fast enough. He made his home behind a piece of coral. I also have tons of empty shells of different sizes. Hes actually made some improvement since I posted. He is breathing better and he is swimming around a lot more. I know they really arent swimmers but it shows that he is getting energy back. My old jawfish was known to come pretty far out of his hole and take a short swim. I hope he makes it. Oh yea, i do have a bit of a deeper sand bed, its just my stand that covers the bottom of the tank to where you cant see any of the sand from a straighton level view.

I wouldn't worry too much at this point. He is just acclimating to his new environment. I pretty much give my fish a week before I become concerned anymore.

Ok new update!! Emergency Level. Seriously two seconds before I posted the previous post he was swimming in the tank. I got up to look and see where he moved to, and there was a hermit, munching at his jaw. The jawfish was fighting to get it off, so I helped a little. Should I pull him from the tank. I dont have a QT but I do have a nano that is up and running. But it does have an anemone. Please someone help, or is it beyond help now. I want him to get better. Apparently he is not acclimating well

I could but its too late, he started to get sucked up in a powerhead. I tried saving him, I put him in a net in the tank just so he couldnt get harmed by anything. And about 10 mins ago, he stopped breathing. I dont know what happened. But I think I am saddest about this fish death. I have wanted one for so so long, just couldnt afford it and he didnt even make it day. This is also the first fish I actually watched died. I tried all I could to save him too, Im really upset about this one. Usually I wake up to find the fish dead, never have I had one die like this.

RIP to the best fish ever, even though you only lasted a day....
