    Hello and Greetings from CA,
This is my first post! I have been reading many forums and I am very impressed with the generous nature of the members of 3reef and the level of knowledge. I am a newbie reefer, but have had freshwater aquariums in the distant past. Hopefully, soon I will amass enough knowledge to contribute to the discussions and help other reefers.
    My current setup:
28 JBJ nanocube HQI setup with a 15W Reef Brite LED strip (installed under the feeder door), Intank Media basket and upgraded return powerheads. The lED's are 5 3w leds being driven at 3w each. The color is actinic 435nm (blue). The halides are 150w jbj bulb ran from feb11 until sep11. I bought the tank used.

I am currently in the 2nd week of cycling with live rock, 2 damsels, and 20#s of sand.

I probably will mainly have fish (maybe 2 clowns), but I would like to try to have some colorful corals.

I would like to modify the light: The metal halide heats the water and so I am considering installing LED's. I talked to rapid LED and they recommend the 24 led system. I want it to be dimmable
    RapidLed.com
(Plug-and-Play Biocube 29 Dimmable Retrofit Kit, 12 Solderless Cool White CREE XP-G LEDs
12 Solderless Royal Blue CREE XP-E LEDs)

My question is regarding the color. The current led's are blue and they make the fish appear very dark. When I put the metal halide on, the damsel's blue are much nicer. Would you recommend installing LED's with more white than blue, to bring out the color of the fish? There seems to be an emphasis on blue LED's in the forums and in the LED websites. I am wondering if there is an advantage to blue light that I am not aware of. Would you recommend a different product.

Any ideas on how best to pull out the MH and install the LED's. Do I need a heatsink or just use the current 4 fans and aluminum that are used for the MH?

    Here are some pictures:

    Thanks

You need to gut everything out, I would email Mike from Rapid and see if he has a heat sink made to go into your hood. If you can find a way to mount a heat sink in there your golden.

    Thanks.
I am wondering why I need to gut everything. Can't I just mount the LEDs where the mh was? If the hood, fans, and aluminum could accommodate the heat from the mh's, then why can't it be used un modified for the led's which produce much less heat?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Have you looked at the JBJ site, or called them. Sometimes I can get someone on the phone that is very helpful and not trying to sell.
