My town got a new pet store. They carry fish, reptiles, birds. Do grooming and other services. I had a decent idea the guy just didn't have a clue about saltwater despite him having around a 150 gallon tank for SW (the only SW tank). The week they opened, the tank didn't even have water in it. The following week it has clowns and corals.

I come back another month later and the tank has plastic corals and anemones, clowns, anthias, wrasses and a Nso Tang. I still don't see the appropriate plumbing for a sump. Also, it looks like he has less light over his huge tank than I do over my Biocube 29. He also fed cooked shrimp to the tank. I saw it laying on the sand. His son, who is admittedly young had no idea what kind of dog my gf's black lab was (and he was "working").

The question is... Do you say anything? Offer advice that is perhaps not welcomed or asked for? I don't see ANY algae in the tank and no aiptasia, but he does have a snowflake eel in with the other fish. Absolutely no clean up crew either.

I think stories like this are pretty typical. Its hard to say if you should offer advice, but if the guy is trying to deal SW out of one 150 gallon tank, it goes without a doubt that he needs some advice. Maybe just ask him how much he knows about saltwater and see what he has to say lol. Thats pretty jacked up though

And as for the stocking "do's and don'ts", I have seen the rules broken hundreds of times at my LFS and seen it work without a hitch. Not always, but probably more often than not lol.

i know this is off topic but the cooked shrimp thing made me think. no lie... i had some fish for 5+ years and they ate small pieces of pemmican beef jerky (spicy) and didnt even spit it out. cooked shrimp would be fine lol but not a whole cooked shrimp sitting on the bottom rofl

As clarification... I don't need a job. I have a year and a half or so until my PhD is done and I teach at the University of Iowa. I feel bad for what's in the tank. I mean, it's good that the tang at least has some swimming room. But there's maybe 15 pounds of rock in the tank... Maybe

They were whole precooked shrimp. Looked to be picked up from the grocery store across the street and just dropped in the tank
