i did not mean to respond negatively but if he read my question right i asked what t8 bulb i could get to replace the one i currently have, and later down the road get a better fixture for under 150 im not trying to go cheap with the hobby knowing that it is an expensive hobby. i know there is good t5 fixtures out there for less than 150 that can be appropriate for the type of corals you guys mentioned. and another question i asked was not answered do brands matter when replacing a t8 bulb. i saw different kinds at my lfs today. such as a coralife 50/50 bulb and some that are just 10000k and some that are just actinic.

 

like i previously stated i would toss the t8's and get t5's or pc's, i know nothing about t8's because its not commonly used over aquariums because of its inefficiency. as for getting a good fixture for under 150 thats not true, but getting one that will grow sot coral that is correct. there are lots of t5 and pc fixtures out there that are less than 150

 

the 10k and the actinic are the spectrum of the bulb. i use mh's at 20k and pcs at 10k. that will determine the color of the bulb. the 20k or actinics would be very blue while the 10k would be more white. for the bulbs i use yes brands do matter, the more expensive obviously the better quality goods are being used. now im not saying buy the most expensive but i wouldnt buy the cheapest. i use coralife power compacts and they were great and phoenix metal halides and have no complaint(alot better than the oddysea brand the fixture came with.

also you said you wanted cheap i noticed your from Chicago heres an ad from craigslist for some guy selling a good t5 ho fixture for 160 bucks(you can bargain him down)

once again you didnt read right and i am not responding in a rude way my previous post said wat t8 bulb could i use to replace for the time being i dont have money to get a new fixture this moment but maybe in a few months i will. i dont plan on putting corals in my tank first i want to get an ok t5 fixture. if you have money to give me for a new t5 fixture id gladly take it tho.

like nc said you dont want to buy the cheapest or the most expensive, you get what you pay for
