as the title says new build. this will be mantis #2 i have a O. japonicus and love her. she is super rare and the queen of everything! so for my new tank i got a 40 gallon... i think. still need to measure it. i am gonna take pictures when it clears up cause i just dumped in 80lbs of cc and sand, and put in 15lbs of live rock and am gonna put in about 5lbs of rubble for the mantis to re arrange to make its home out of. i am ordering 100 cerith snails from reefcleaners.org for both the tanks. i am thinking an O. scyllarus. just cause of how big they get. the tank will be big enough for sure and am gonna put in macroalgae to help filter and for the snails to eat.
pictures will be postes A.S.A.P. tomorrow if the tank is cleared up. i still have to wait for the tank to cycle so thats why im gonna get all the snails and maybe a damsel as a good house warmer haha. but my O. japonicus loves her damsel mates... well hopefully you guys follow this thread and learn things on the way. feel free to ask any questions and i will do my best to help you out as i know a bit about stomatopods. im friendly dont worry!

With that size tank you might as well get an O. scyllarus. There really isn't anything else that gets as big and is as interesting to keep. There are a ton of cool smaller species but a 40g would be over kill.

hahaha you guys are gonna laugh so hard!!!! i just did deminsions..... 60 gal..... just got my mantis today! its a 3/4 to 1 inch Gonodactylaceus ternatensis. haha its gonna be so funny with it in my 60 gallon. i wont add it into my 60 gal till its done cycling so im putting it in my 15 gallon for the time being. it will be the funnies thing ever seeing a mantis that is an inch big with a 60 gallon tank all to itself!!! i will post pics as soon as it is added into the tank. i still need to figure out the sex of it so thats why im calling it "it" haha

Why not leave the G. ternatensis in the 15? Hopefully you aren't a light sleeper with a mantis tank so close to your bed. ;D

I still think a 60 gallon screams for a Peacock. Or a mated pair of peacocks

OR...I had an idea. Get some clear glass or acrylic cut, and divide the tank in half or in thirds. It'd be awesome to have 3 smaller mantis in the tank rather than one in it :)

thats a good idea Jwin! i actuall really am thinking of that! i would probably divide it in half... cause its a 60 gallon tall or whatever. so its 30long 18wide and 25 tall? i think those are the demensions? i cant remember but if i divided it in half it would be perfect! i really just dont want to pull all the sand and everything back out though... i just put it in and started the cycle on it... i also have a 20 sittin around just yellin at me.... (tank)"put a mantis in here!!!!! they are the best thing ever!!!! i know you want toooo!!!!" lol im really hoping to get a picture of him tonight and i know my O. japonicus will let me take a picture of her she loves the camera! i tore down my WHOLE reef tank for her.... lol she better be happy!
=Jwin= what kind of stomatopods do you have?
