hey guys, i just recently stumbled upon the Picotope 3 gallon nano tank and i have decided to pick one up. Mostly because i would like a little reef tank to take to college with me, and this has gotten good reviews and seems like a quality product. but this brings me to you guys, as usual when i have questions. i will just make a list. lol

-what does anyone recommend as far as powerheads this small go? i really dont know much about them.

-what would anyone recommend for livestock? i was thinking maybe a tiger goby? or something very small and a hermit or shrimp.

-what would be a quality heater for a tank that size? the only experience i have with heaters that small was the walmart brand, and im not too impressed.

    Any other suggestions?

Actually, you could put a few critters in there. I like the combo my cousin has: Yellow watchman, cleaner wrasse, and cleaner shrimp. That way the shrimp can clean the wrasse and it can work the other way around too.

I wouldn't think you would need a heater. Cover the top of the tank with glass and that should hold in plenty of heat from your light. Or at least that works in the South.

i wish i didnt need the heater. that would be great to do what you are recommending but my room is typically in the low sixties. i turn on my ceramic heater to warm up the room but that really dries it out and then more water evaporates from my tanks. plus my parents always run in and turn it off, claiming that im using too much power... but i have three tanks in my room... i dont really get it. lol

as far as a powerhead goes i have been researching and this sounds like a good option to me. Aquarium Water Circulation and Water Pumps: Taam SEIO Prop Super Flow Pump

    any thoughts?

According to LiveAquaria a Tiger Watchman Goby need a minimum tank size of 50 gallons.

    This is what they suggest...

I would wait as far as the powerhead. Your HOB filter will create some current not to mention if you set up a HOD refug that would healp a bit.

I would put no fish at all in a 3 gallon. It's perfect for a pico reef with nice corals, sexy shrimp, etc. All fish will make use of the space given to them, no matter how small from what I've found. Even clown gobies skip all over large tanks and they're tiny. Good luck! Koralia nanos work perfectly, I had a K nano in mine before I traded it off.

Thats a big negative on the watchman and wrasse. You could MAYBE put either a neon goby OR a yellow clown goby if your water parameters are perfect and stable. Top offs will be challenging in a tank that size. But a cleaner shrimp or sexy shrimp, a snail and hermit crab and a few corals would be OK.

i was thinking about maybe a neon goby, but i am definitly focusing on the corals and aquascaping in this tank instead of the fish. a shrimp would be cool but i dont really have the heart to cramp an animal in a nano if its not happy.

oh and jossmalo there is a difference between tiger watchman gobys and yellow watchman gobys. i have a yellow watchman goby and i have heard of them being comfortably housed in a ten gallon, even though i keep mine in a twenty. but a three is still crazy small for a fish of that size.

Maybe use a Hydor Mini for a heater. Koralia Nano powerhead. I would still say no fish - I think it is cruel to put fish in something so small. Maybe some small shrimp.
