    Hi,

I just bought a Mag 9.5. The outlet is 3/4" and I bought the PVC coupling to make it 1" for higher return flow(right?). I am gonna do the plumbing tomorrow and I was wondering should I do get a ball valve to control the flow back to the sump? or I really don't need to spend those extra money/work?

    Thanks!

You definitely do not want to control the flow rate back to the sump. You will overflow your aquarium. The ball value would go after the pump on the return line. I’m not sure about the mag drives but you will need to check with the manufacture to make sure you can throttle the flow rate or you might burn up the pump.

Yes a Mag 9 can be throttled back and I would recommend adding it. It will control your flow back to the tank. Just put it after the pump. Never choch a pump off prior to the pump

Aw, man....I did all the plumping with 1" PVC AND THEN I found out that using 1.5" is the minimum hose size that should be used for maximum flow. anyone know how far off the GPH would this make???

    Thanks!
