Blueline is another, good point. I've read some good things about them too.

Blueline are very nice. I have used multiple models on different tanks and all have truley impressed me. I have used the 30HDX, 40HDX and the 70HD.

I'm supposed to be picking up a pump made by the company that makes blue line tonight. An MD 40 External Water Pump 710 gph to drive my skimmer. It's supposed to be similar to Iwaki MD40RLT. For $75 plus tax I figured it is worth the risk of playing with an off brand.

Sorry bud but the MD40 is nothing like the Iwaki. For one thing the pressure on the MD40 is 10.5 max and the Iwaki is 21. Then the flow is similar but not once you put a little pressure on that MD40, it drops pretty quickly. Now maybe you mean't the WMD40RLXT, which has about the same head pressure but the flow on the MD40 at 0 is 17 gpm vs. the Iwaki at 23 gpm.

Plus quality.  The Iwaki and the MD40 look similar but the quality on the Iwaki is much higher, that is why the MD40 only carries a 6 month warranty and the Iwaki carries a full year.

OK I got the pump. It says the max. head is 4.8m and the capacity is 52 l/min so that works out to about 15' and 13.75 gal/min or 825 gal/hour. The skimmer needs 600-800 so I should be good to go for my application. I'm off to the hardware store to get a 1" to 3/4" reducer. I'll post up when done.

It's installed. No, it's not an Iwaki. Just a very basic and cheap Chinese made knock off. On the onther hand it's pretty quite with almost no motor noise, just a mild swish from the water moving through. I'm going to guess that it makes about 1/3 the noise of my Dolphin 2700. From looking at the flow vs. the pump that I had running I'd guess that the advertised 710 gal hr at 6" is a little optimistic, but pretty close. Maybe 650-680. It has a good strong output and that's after it was necked down from 1" to 1/2" to handle the venturi. For my application, it's a little overkill. I'll have to watch how it breaks in, but all in all for $80 after tax for a reasonably quiet external pump it's a lot of bang for the buck. If anyone is interested here is the sellers web page. www.aquacave.com He sells the pumps on ebay for a little less than his site price.

Hope it works out. Sounds like the skimmer will improve from the flow all the same.

Hey boss, is the product review section working? The old server was booting me out. Should I post a review?
