Okay guys I am looking to buy a bigger pump for my 72 reef. I am looking to achieve around 2500 to 3000 gph overall. I will use three different power heads

I went with the external pump to cut back on the heat in the tank and also save room in my sump/fuge. I have an Iwaki external pump I got from reefgeek.com Great pump and very quite.

Both have positives and negatives. Sump size, head height and how many uses the pump will have will help us greatly.

will this be for your sump return? I would not do anything over 700 gph at head hight or you will have microbubble issues thru your tank.

One of the key questions are, what is the length of piping required aka head? Also, all 90 & 45 degree fittings you will loose 1-2 feet of head depending on pipe/tubing size. Depending on MFG unions, check valve, & ball valves will cut your head pressure of your pump as well. Simple example I purchased unions from Lowes when I first started my tank. Before I started to put everything together, I needed some more of them, so I went to Home Depot since it was closer to my house. When I got home, I noticed that the MFG was different. I stuck my finger in the opening on the ones from Lowes and my finger wouldn't go through the union, this would restrict water flow. I checked the ones from Home Depot & my finger went right through no problems. I returned all the ones from Lowes. Whenever possible try not to use 90 degree fittings.

Yeah I know that stuff. I am trying to find a new pump. The one I have now only give me about 2/3 rds more more of the overall performance.
