    Be careful with this method. If he gets used to it, he won't go outside (or let you know he needs to). My wife's former dog (little squeaking bastard) was trained using the "peepad/box" method...and refuses to go outside. Goes straight for that pad.

    Oh, I would never hit a dog. It seems like most people(not just your friend) think dogs can understand you. I.e. "Don't bark; you know better than that." Um, no it doesn't lol. Dogs bark, normally, unless you teach them not to. Hitting them or scolding won't enforce that.
