I have recently begun to get some red/green/brown growth on my sand. I do not like it and would much prefer the crystal white sand that I previously had. That being said I think it may be my fault. I've been neglectful in changing my RO/DI filters. Since I got my unit over 14 months I have not replaced them and they call for replacement every 6 months. I believe this is the cause of my sand problem. All parameters check out fine but I do not have a TDS meter so this is just a theory(obviously it's not helping). My question is..... once I get my filters changed and start using the fresh water will this sand growth die off on it's own ;D or am I going to have to clean it out :( ?

    Thanks!

It should die off on its own assuming you don't have any phosphates or nitrates in the system and your calcium/alk/mag levels are good.

amcarrig is correct. The growth should die out on its own. Once the filters are changed, the enviroment that caused this growth will be gone. Without the "food" this growth needs, it should die. Again, make sure you do not have any nitrates or phosphates in your water. I would also suggest getting a TDS meter just so this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Great to hear! You are correct, I do need to get a TDS meter soon.
