New Router ... Need some help!

    I just bought a D-Link DIR-815 Router for my computer because I had to move the router farther from my PS3 and this is supposed to be the goods for range and gaming.

    I installed the router, followed everything on the disk, everything was successful ... however I still can't connect to the internet. It says I'm connected, but local only, where it normally says local and internet.

    Anyone have any ideas as to why? If I unplug it, and plug in the old router, all is well. Plug in the new one ... and nothing.

    All the proper lights are flashing, all the computers pick up the router ... its relaying the signal, but something is blocking or preventing the connection to the internet and I don't know what it could be.

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    It's likely because you didn't clone the MAC address of your computer.

    You need to go into the router's config page (usually 192.168.0.1), and find the MAC settings, and hit the clone button.

    I had that same problem when I hooked mine up. I can't remember how I fixed it!! LOL But I think it had something to do with going to an IP address or something...


    Agh sorry! I hope you figure it out!

    Just did this ... saved the settings ... same problem. I'm so confused as to what it could be!

    This is the only computer in the house, and is the same one you had when you originally installed the old router?

    If not, you need to hook up the old router and grab the address off of it. The vast majority of ISPs require that their service is bound to a single device by this address, which is why this whole thing needs to be done.

    It's also kind of silly for them to do this, considering that every single router has a "Clone MAC" feature, but that's another story...

    Did you restart the router and modem? Leave both off for 10mins.

    A lot of the times, you have to register the new modem with your service provider. This allows the service provided to "know" that it is you. You should be able to contact their help desk for directions on how to do this.

    Assuming you are running cable/DSL here.

    I would power down the cable modem and the router. power them up in this order. turn on the cable modem let it boot up make sure that its online.. should be a light indicating if its online or not also make sure the activity light is blinking and its random.. After that is on and you verify its online boot up the router. Should pull your IP settings. If not you may want to check the firmware in the router make sure its the latest and greatest. Give that a shot.. Good luck.
