Planning on getting new sand because I hate how my real smooth fine sand keeps flying all over the place if i place my powerhead down. So theres not enough flow at bottom of tank, causing cyano to start up except there is no red slimey stuff, it just looks like sand became red sand.

Anyway I heard that I could just place a new sand on top of my current sand,, like aragonite sand? Is this true?
Also what sand would be good?

i dont know about adding new sand on top of your old sand, I would think the red algea would eventually just grow up through the new sand. Do you have any sand sifters, ie sleeper gobies? How long has the tank been up? What is your phosphates at?

As far as black sand...I would not go solely with black sand esp depending on the type of lights you might have. I would definatly not do it with MH lights. I have black sand in my old mantis tank, and I did it specifically for the reason you are considering it...thought it would stay neater looking. Unfortunatly it turns to a greyish color and looks just as crappy as the pink.

What you can do, and this is what I did with my predator tank, mix it half and half or even more with fiji pink. I took about 2/3 black sand and mixed it with 1/3 fiji black and like the look of it!
