what is your turn over rate of the tank? I read that they need a realatively calm tank.

great pictures!!! Seahorses are the reason i jumped into saltwater but soon realized that keeping one isnt as easy as buying one. so i went with the basics for saltwater reef tanks. having felt like ive learned enough from saltwater reefs to keep seahorses im soon looking to start a new tank.

this thread is truly an inspiration. well to me anyway..thx for sharing.

I have a HOB top skimming filter that is rated for a 75 gallon tank and 2 maxi jets 600's with Hydor Flo Rotating Deflectors. so its no all that calm. I have heard 2 trains of thought, 1 no flow at all and 2 lots of flow just nothing really strong! Mine like to swim into the current coming from the Maxi jets.....

Couple questions.....I know the males "raise" the babies but how can you tell what is male and what is female?

How much, if you don't mind me askin, did each horse cost you?

When they have babies do you have to move them to a new tank?

I see you have what look like fake plants, are fake better than real for seahorses?

Can their krill, mysis, be "bred" and is that easy to do or is it easier just to feed live?

I would love to have horses but I would so have to research first! And talk my husband into another tank! He thinks 3 is enough!

First off I recomend that you check out www.seahorse.org, its the best website out there concerning seahorses.

The male has a brood pouch that runs from the Anal fin down the front of the tail. Here is a link that has some very good photos and drawings -Sexing Seahorses

I would recommend that unless you have had previous experience with wild caught seahorses you buy tank bread. They are available for between 35 to 65 dollars each. there are some tank bread southern erectus available on seahorse.org for 55 each right now.

Yes, since the babies require constant attention and have special food needs it is recommended that you move them. If left in the display tank they would also have to contend with filters and power heads which is a battle that they would most definitely lose!

the fake plants I am using were mostly a personal choice, plus live ones that are that long are extremely hard to find and very expensive if you can find them.

Yes Mysis can be bred but not only are they very expensive if bought live and I myself don't have the time, space or money to invest in that. It is so much simpler to feed frozen.

My wife just shakes her head when I talk about my tanks. I have 4 running right now 2 devoted to seahorses and 2 reef. I am working on my 5th right now......;D, Like I always say, there are worse things I could be doing like sitting in a bar drinking!!!

I have said this to my wife more than once. Drinking can be much more expensive. And this keeps me home. As if that was a problem before!!!! I never go out!!!!;D
