I have recently setup a new tank, its a 40b with a 700gph gl*******s overflow and a 3/4 return, i set it up last night and it is way to loud, im wanting to run this in my living room, but if i cant get it quiet i guess i wont be able to.

The noise is in the overflow going down to the sump, i cant seem to get it quiet, and the overflow box in the tank is also loud, the air tube doesn't seem to make any difference on sound. My question is basically how can i make this a silent system for my living room. I have i plumbed straight down with just 2 45 degree bends which i thought we be fine, ive heard the less angles the better, and it exits below water line into filter sock.

    Any opinions??

Do you have a valve on the over flow restricting the flow at all? Just an idea. maybe if you could restrict it back a bit it could kind of fill the hose with water and prevent air in it and could cut back on the noise. It will throw off your flow but maybe another valve on the return and you could balance it out?

Do you have the baffle in the overflow box installed correctly? Which kit did you get from them?

yeah i have thought about a gate valve on the overflow plumbing, but if i have to restrict a lot, then a snail or something clogs it i have no backup drain and will flood. And i do have a valve on the return

its a 700 gph glass-holes overflow kit, and yes im assuming the baffle is in there right, its right in the middle pressed all the way down onto the vertical pieces

You never want to restrict the overflow as you stated it could cause a flood. Keep in mind that new pipes are always loud on startup. A slime coat will develop in the pipes after a few days and it should quiet down and stop gurgling.;)

Yeah, keep tinkering and making small adjustments as the next couple of days go by. it should quite down. I have mine right behind my head when im sitting on the couch and dont notice it anymore. Keep in mind it will never be 100% silent.

Definitely.Every tank I have ever owned had this issue for the first few days. I wouldn't panic yet. Let it run for a while, if it still is too loud take a picture of your setup and one of us can help you reduce the noise.;)

Probably not. It might increase your flow but not enough that I would change it.Give it some time and then you can make changes if need be.
