I recently purchased a new Reef Octopus skimmer. The skimmer will be setup externally and will have three four 90 bends before making it into the skimmer chamber.

    Up 1 foot,
    horizontal 3 feet
    down 1 foot

What size feed pump should I purchase. I already bought one, but I want to see peoples opinion so I can figure out if I need to change it!

90 gal tank w/ additional 23 gallons held in sump.
Only 2 fish at the moment
    running for 1 year

    Thanks!

"The recommended maximum flow rating for this skimmer is 250gph. These numbers are based on zero back pressure on the output plumbing. If you add 90 degree bends on the plumbing back to a sump you may need to back off the amount of water being feed through the skimmer. We recommend that you use a ball valve inline from your feed pump to the skimmer allowing you to control the water flow."

id try a 500-600 gph to start because of the climb i expect that number to be cut in half.

So a mag 5 would be ideal?

yep. i switched the small pump on my old coralife skimmer to a mag three. the pump was much more efficient because the coralife one was supposedly the same rating but not nearly as powerful. I had to adjust the air intake a bit to match the boosted water flow but after a bit of tweeking the skimmer worked better than ever.

I finished setting everything up earlier and attached a ball valve to the mag 5. Should I increase the flow to the skimmer if the bubbles are not going all the way to the collection cup? Or should I wait for it to break in?
