Water level is supposed to be middle of the top vents-otherwise it doubles as a surface skimmer. Much needed in smaller tanks without over flows :)

I have mine with the water level set to the middle of the teeth on the skimmer.

What do you mean by top vents? Are you referring to the tamped out logo?

can we get some pictures people? middle of the teeth? top vents? look here is a picture of where mine is set with the water level, as well as how deep I have my collection cup set.

The pic is kinda crappy but you can see that I have my water line just about the carved out Hydror logo. I get some nasty looking skim but its always just water (very nasty water) I've never gotten just foam or gunk

Where the Hydor name is, (I call them vents) but is actually the intake area. Water level is supposed to come to the middle of them. So it's actually drawing water from the surface (where the protein collects as protein floats)

To my eye it looks like your water level is to high. You don't want the vents completely covered. Half in-half out.

This is high as I can get it right now! This is the new one less than a day old so still breaking in! Although my last one was in the same place an was skimming fine! Once I got it working right! Well see how it goes in a few days! When I have my new lighting system I'll be able to move it up if need be!

So with Cosmo's picture, the water level should be in the middle of the Hydror logo or "vent"?? I guess mine is a little high then, will solve this problem today.

I just feel like when the water level is there the foam doesn't build up high enough and I never collect any gunk. The bubbles burst at the water's surface and my collection cup never fills with anything unless the water level is high or I shove the collection cup all the way down into the skimmer.

As per the manual that is actually too low! But it seems to be working for me! Already getting some good skimmate on day 2! With very little water!
