I currently am running a ten gallon sump i built on my 37g ds tank.It has worked great for me and my water is close to perfect. I have a hang on skimmer not a in sump on this tank. It is layed out with the overflow to filter sock, then one baffle, then refugium, then bubble trap, then return.
I am setting up a new 65g tank and will be building a 20g long sump with a in sump skimmer. I wont to do the same layout as my ten gallon but have been told i should put the return in the middle so i could control the water flow to the refugium. I had plan doing overflow to filter sock with the in sump skimmer in the same chamber, then a baffle ,then refugium , then bubble trap, then return. I am going to be using the same return pump and overflow box and do not think i will have a problem with to much flow setting it up like my ten. any suggestions would be great? Thanks

Fuges should be only 25% of the flow roughly, gives it time to work. I would either put the fuge on the end with the return in the middle or make the 10g old sump your fuge as a seperate unit returning into the return section of the sump. For me it's return with skimmer, bubble trap, then return with fuge as seperate but thats just me, if what you have is working and you like it go for it.

+1 to this if you have the extra room...the more total volume the better!

I have a 40gal sump on my 90gal tank. All of my drain water goes into my refuge, then cascades into my middle section where my skimmer is, goes through my bubble traps and finally my return.

There is no set design and varies from one setup to another.

Matter of fact, i'll be adding a 5gal tank prior to my refuge to allow me to remove the cover I have on my refuge do to bubble mists.

Nice thread.. Similar to mine, except where the skimmer & return are.. Do you find yourself after building it, "ah I should & could of done this like that?" LOL..
