I've had a 40B tank running for about 6 months and have been slowly getting together some stuff to finally put a sump under it. I have a 20L that I am going to use. I have a design I'm looking at, but wanted to run it by some people for feedback.

Attached below is the design I'm looking at. Dimensions are not listed there, but they are roughly as follows:
    Intake/Skimmer section: 9"
    Refugium section: 12"
    Return section: 5"

Baffles are set 1" apart. One question I have is whether I will need the 3 baffles on both sides, or just one? If just one, would they be on the left side after the intake, or the right side before the return?

I have not decided the exact height of each baffle, but I know for the intake section atleast will be established based on the skimmer's requirements. I'm looking at a corallife 65 for that.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

That is basically how I have my sump setup, and it seems to be working well for me. However if you search for other setups, you will see that a lot of people split off the intake so one line drains into the skimmer (left) and another line drains into the 'fuge (right). Then both sides go to the return pump in the middle. The benefits of doing it this way is you can control the flow rate through the 'fuge (install ball valves on both drain lines so you can control each side separately), and some people think having 'raw' (unskimmed) water entering the 'fuge is better than having some skimmed and some not.

As far as the skimmer, I would say stay away from the Coralife 65 :( I have one on my 46 bow and I swear at it a few times a week. I have it in a HOB position, which it really is not made for. You would be using it in the sump so it may actually work better. Either way, I had to modify it so it did not produce millions of micro bubbles. The skimmer has overflowed twice on me, ruining the ceiling below the tank on the lower floor. The collection cup keeps leaking on me where it threads onto the body, even after cleaning all of the threads, removing and cleaning the gasket, and tightening as much as possible (by hand!). My wife hates it more than I do!

For my 55 w/ 30 gal sump I have an in the sump Eshopps PSK-100. I am far happier with this unit! It requires a constant sump level, but if you have an ATO, this is not a problem. Once you get the level where you want it, you should not need to touch it. The collection cup is much easier to remove and seals much better than the Coralife. Basically, everything about it except the directions are much better :)

    Hope this helps!
