So I am building a new sump (40G) and relocating it to the basement. My current tank is doing well so i just figured I wouldn't change anything, current sump is 30G:

    Skimmer >Return>Refugium

The fuge has chaeto and some live rock, the chaeto has ok growth but has slowed over the past year and the fuge has started to develop black looking algae.

I also run GA and GFO

So do I keep the refugium in the new sump or not. What else would I use the space for.

If you are keeping a reef system, a refugium with chateo is a excellent place for pods and other beneficial things for coral. In my opinion, i would definitely keep it and move it. You can't go wrong!

I qod definitely recommend a fuge it helps so much in exporting nitrites and nitrates. Plus te added benefit of growing my own pods and algae for my tangs.

how big is the DT thats going to be linked to this system?- scrap that 90 gallons right?

based on the reading i have done in order for a refugium/sump to be an effective N03 and N02 exporter it needs to be pretty damn big (and this seems to be the case) to make a dent in the DT.

this said, and as others mentioned its a great little safe haven for pod growth. though it may not be as an efficient exporter as hopped the pros beat the cons in my opinion so i would say go for it!!
    my 2 cents

My philosophy is having some Refugium is better than having none. As I use my fuge for mainly pod production anyways.
