Hey everyone I am looking for some thoughts,

So when I first set up my 90g a put a blue eyed tang (two spot bristletooth) in the tank. She was in the tank for a year before she passed away. I can only assume that it was caused by diet or something as I never saw any signs of parasites or anything like that. She got fed nori and pellets daily also constantly grazed all of the film algae on the rocks and glass that I let build up as it is a staple of their diet to my understanding. After she passed away our LFS had a very small blue eye and I loved her so much I decided I would try one more time. This one only made it probably 6 months, its diet consisted of occasional nori (but she never ate very much) and mostly seaweed pellet and mysis. She stayed nice and plump, but one night all the sudden she didnt look well, and that night she passed away. Now I am not a fish killer and I feel terrible when it happens, like my dog or cat had died. I bury them in my back yard and say a few words (maybe I'm weird) anyways I haven't put a new tang in for a while because of the loss.

Now I am trying to decide what is the best option, I really love tangs and would like a Tomini, a Blue Eye, a Mimic, or a yellow tang. However, I am very scared to buy another bristletooth family tang as I obviously have not had the best luck maybe my own fault. Anyways any helpful or constructive advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you had any other issues with any other fish in your tank?

No. Clowns have been in there probably 2 years now, and a mandarin probably a year and a half.

I think it is just bad luck. You said that the fish was eatting well and doing fine then out of no where just dead? No signs of ich?

FWIW, I've never had luck keeping a yellow eyed kole tang. Not sure why, but I've tried to keep them a total of 3 times over the past 15 years and all have died, one very quickly and two lived for some time and were eating and then, poof! I think yellow tangs are pretty hardy but I'm not sure a 90 is big enough for the long-term. Sailfins are also very pretty and hardy but again, not sure about minimum tank sizes. I think if you've not had good luck with tangs from this particular family, I might try another family...just my .02.

Vinny usually has the link that gives minimum tank sizes for various fish, hopefully, he'll pop on and give you some advice.

I'd love a blue eye again but don't want another fish to die. Probably end up with a yellow tang or a tomini.

My tomini has been great for almost 2 years. I think some bristletooths do not do well long term in a tank.

What is your tominis diet? I know I've read that some people didn't think bristletooths did well because their months aren't designed to be able to tear nori

NSL pellets, Formula 2 flakes, my own home blend featuring shredded nori and spirulina. I had a lavender tang that was probably an orange striped bristletooth that may have starved because of diet, or died due to eunice worm attacks /shrug. The food I made is pretty amazing though I think it will meet the nutritional requirements of anything.
