I just set up my new 55 gallon yesterday morning. Last night i went to pick up my 90lbs of LR from a guy locally that was breaking down his tank.

The rock is beautiful and full of life but also FULL of Aiptasia!! Right now I have the rock in a rubbermaid container with a powerhead and heater and in a 29 gallon with a powerhead and heater. I have ordered Aiptasia X but it will not be here till Friday.

    What should I do?
    1. Wait for the aiptasia x and kill it one rock at a time (would take a couple weeks to get through all the rock if i quarantined each piece as it was being treated.
    2. Put the rock in my new tank and kill the visible ones then add peppermint shrimp after the cycle?
    3. Boil the rock and start over?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Also, don't skimp on the shrimp. Some are realy lazy. For a 55 I would probably get 8 or so.

Don’t worry about, I would do nothing at all. Your tank needs to cycle yet and in all likelihood will kill the aptasia and most (if not) all of the life on the rock.

BTW, welcome to 3Reef ! Let's talk after your cycle and take it from there.

+1 on this, the first cycle is brutal on anything in the tank normally kills everything

To be honest, I think you should contact the guy selling the rock and see if you can back out of it if you can. You will be very sad to see what you are about to do to that rock – just an opinion. If you move forward with your purchase, yes ass it to the tank and let it cycle.

I already bought the rock. I have it set up in a rubbermaid and a 29 gallon right now.

I really could not beat the price, i got 150lbs for $160.00 as he was taking down his tank.

Aiptasia X doesnt work well, they look like they die and than come back in threes... get joes juice once you inject them with joe's juice they will be gone for good. i just went threw this. i also added 3 b. nudis and 4 peppermint shrimps to my tank. but never seen the peppermint shrimps eat an aiptasia ... if they are doing that they must be sneaking them at night ... lol the peppermints are not hurting any thing, and are part of my clean up crew now, they are scavengers and help to keep in the rocks clean.

I ended up with Aiptasia on my LR too. I didn't know what it was at the time. I have been able to keep the numbers down though. Here's what I have found so far.

Aiptasia can survive the cycle. The ones in my tank did.

Peppermints can be hit or miss. Even if they don't eat Aiptasia they are still an interesting addition.

Aiptasia-x has been hit or miss for me. It kills some and others comeback.

Manually nuking individual Aiptasia seems to be the most effective. I'm going to try Kalk paste or Joe's juice next.
