I'm gonna set up a 40g tank for the kids for xmas. They have wanted one for awhile. I have everything in my garage so I figured it would be pretty easy. So my question is would the best bet be to start the tank out with water from my big tank or start with all new and cycle it? My plan was to add new sand and base rock with a rock from my tank and a little sand too. lso like half water from my tank and half new SW

Its not the water that is responsible for your cycle. Its the die off form LR/LS and the growth and reproduction of bacteria and the natural process of Ammonia>Nitrite>Nitrate.
Using old water wont do anything for your tank or help prevent a cycle.
If you use new sand/new LR it will cycle. If you go with base rock and a small rock from your tank (Provided it is submersed in water at all times) you will only go through a mini cycle.

cool, thanks . I will probably go with new sand, base rock and one small piece of live rock. Let it cycle.
