Hey guys, so I am in the process of putting together my 90 Gallon Reef Ready tank. Everything is new, and I am down to the lighting- Please help! I have no idea where to go or what to do. I am planning a Reef tank and dont know what I should get. Are LED's good? And if so how many? The tank is 48 long x 24 x 18 I believe. Any help is WONDERFUL!

well im a halie junky, and just switched to t5s.. i got the ati powermodule...and i love t5s now..just dont get the shimmer, but i get it with moonlights i added...

leds are sooooooooooooooooo expensive, and not worth it to me..and you cant change the color..what u buy you better be happy with...

halides are still the sh$$, but get really hot and i was having to add soooo much water with evaporation, got to be a pain..

so its really how much money you wanna spend...it would cost you over 1300$ to set that tank up with leds to grow sps and clams anywhere in the tank... you would need at least 3 fixtures, roughly running 400$ a piece

The new Boost PAR30's are only $75 each you could get away with 4 of those. I believe there are even dimmable LED PAR30's out there now. I have seen these first hand over a 120 and they give great colour and coverage. The jury is still out over LEDs but they really are becoming more and more popular. I am running a TEK 4 bulb T5 unit now with ATI bulbs but if I had it to do over I would go with the Boost bulbs the cost would have been the same but long term savings both on hydro and bulb replacement is where LEDs are winning the battle in my opinion. There are a couple of LED sponsors on this site that are very quick to answer any questions and are glad to help. Check them out on the sponsors forum. ;)
