    The amount of air going into the drain regulates flow.

    Ok, I think I understand that part now, after drilling the air holes bigger and watching the bigger hole control the flow better, so why is everybody saying that my 2 pumps are way too much...

    Because there is no need for 2 pumps lol. One single pump will do the job and give your skimmer more contact time. Water to fast through the sump doesn't allow for proper filtration.

    I would re-plumb to use the second pump as a closed loop if it were mine. Since you already have the pump some pvc and maybe a bulk head or two would be minimal cost. I am not sure if it is a possibility at this point or not.
