Hi all, I'm buying my first tank this week. I 've never even owned a beta, but I'm excited about the hobby.

The tank I'm buying is coming with live rock, but the guy has already drained it and has the rocks sitting in water. (there's no other living creatures) He's been putting tap water in there. I wanted the original water, but it was too late.

Question is then... will these rocks need special treatment before mixing new water, and putting them in it? I'm going to have to do a little construction on the cabinet because it won't fit where I want it... so the rocks may have to sit in water several more days.

Will the tank still need to do a full cycle with rocks that were already in a mature system?:afro:

If he's been using tap water, I'd nuke the rocks and start fresh, actually I'd do that anyway. You don't want someone elses problem algae. Somewhere around here there are several posts on reusing live rock...do the soaking in bleach method.

congrats on your first tank! yes you will have a full cycle since the rock has been sitting and it's been getting fresh water onto it. that's a no no.... lots of dead stuff on there. plus really unless you're buying a complete, running tank, you're gonna have a cycle.....no way of getting around it, sorry.... others will post on how to treat the rock

Ok , I've been reading those threads... I'll look them up. Just wasn't sure if that would be my case.
Can't wait to get this thing going.
