I have 55 gallon tank with 50lbs of rock in it. The rock is cured and the tank has been sitting there for almost a year now. I want to get 2 clown fish to start off, and am wondering if you think if this is a good idea. Also, what do they eat?

    Thank you!

I think it's a great idea! And they eat just about darn near anything. Flake, mysis, brine, krill will all work. :) Have fun!

Oh, and welcome to 3reef!! :)

Wow, a breath of fresh air in a post….cool.

    Welcome to 3reef Rachsue !

Usually they first post is along the lines of….help, I just set up my tank and my LFS told me xyz (xyz is never good and the tank is always too young)

Your tank is established and I think it’s a wonderful idea to begin stocking your display. Obviously before you go dropping fish in there test the water and know the parameters are where they should be.

On my 180 I use a 55 gallon sump, in it I use an inline canister for Chemi-clean and purigen. I have a refugium of mixed macro’s running on a reverse photo of my DT and I perk 10% of my DT tank through it per hour. Lighting is three 250 watt MH HQI’s and four 96 watt PC actinics.

I skim post my refugium. I keep a micron filter over the return pump for polishing and I replace it once a week for a month – then I take a couple months off (too much hassles to tend to that indefinitely). That’s it.

Thank you for all the replies! We have a 55 gallon tank, 50lbs of live rock, Ehiem canister, coralife 196watt, 50/50. We also have a neon green plate and a cabbage leather coral.

We have not purchased a protein skimmer yet; it is a decision we have not made because we find that people are for and against them. BUT, that is why we are here. We want to start with this tank and once we establish it and learn more, get a much larger tank.

We are planning on purchasing 2 clarkes clownfish, 2 tangs, and a chocolate chip starfish. We may put in 2 more fish as well, but are still deciding on what ones we want. At this time we have 10 blue legged crabs and some feather duster which must have come with our live rock. Any suggestions would be good.

Thanks for welcoming us! We look forward to speaking with experts who actually run their own tanks!

Thanks for the compliment! We have been looking into this for a year and appreciate that someone noticed that although we are new, we do have some knowledge and are very patient!

We did test our water, and everything is at zero for now, because there is nothing in our tank!!!
