One more question... when i go to get my piece of live rock, how big should it be? Also what should i look for when you say "established" i know that an established tank will be a healthy thriving tank, but isnt it still possible that their live rock can still have those "bad" hitchhikers on it? That is what i am trying to avoid introducing into my tank which is why im going with the dry rock... I guess what im trying to say is what do i look for?

In general, look for pests (hair algae, aiptasia anemones, majano anemones etc.) that you do not want to have to battle with. I prefer light porous rock that will maximize the surface area for bacteria and a generally appealing appearance. Also smell the rock to see what it smells like, if it smells rotten then I wouldn't get it being that a lot of the live stuff on it died off ie) waste of time.. Make sure the rock isn't slimy too, It shouldn't be. If it is, that may represent something dying on the surface, or a type of bacteria that isn't the beneficial kind. Again, you can still buy the rock if you like, but it will require some work. Make sure you also look at its shape as you do need to fit in with the rest of your live rock too.
