I'm curious to know what those of you with good experience at this thinks about setting up a new tank without a skimmer for the first few weeks. Good idea or not?

How many weeks is a few?

Probably won't hurt. Like Rusty said, a lot of people don't skim while cycling a new tank.

    EDIT:

I WOULD skim while cycling a new tank ... but a lot of people don't. :D

I am talking about the cycling time. I read something that I should have the skimmer running, but it truly makes more sense to me NOT having on. That's why I was just trying to hear more about others thoughts. I'm really trying to do this right and I have read lots about each component and each part of the process separately, but now I'm trying to put it altogether and I'm REALLY trying not to make it any tougher than it is. Thanks.

I added a skimmer 4 months after getting the tank... no problems. Just take it slow. I added the light after the cycle too.

Our tank is 15 years old and has never had a skimmer. We recently started looking to invest in one since we are adding alot more sps and just want the extra flow and filtration. However our tank at the moment has lots of livestock, inverts and coral and the parameters stay perfect. A skimmer can only benefit you and is a great addition but in alot of cases it isnt a must have. We have stayed on top of water changes and monitor the parameters frequently and have had great success without a skimmer so far.
