I have been thinkin of doing a 20g long build, my question is that if I use old water change water from my tank in the new tank and about 10lbs of LR from my year old tank along with just dry sand but a deep sand bed. It will be run on an hob filter or I may possibly remove the fluval from my 55 since its got a good skimmer plus 10g fuge w/ dsb and I can run a reactor for carbon. Will the tank still go through a cycle? I wouldnt think so but just wanted some opinions.

Also, any suggestions on what type of tank to do w/ the 20long.

I would think it would go through a small cycle. I dont believe using water from an established tank is really going to do anything for you. The bacteria you are needing is in the SB and LR.

Even though dry sand would have nothing that will die and I would be using LR from my old tank, plus filter, plus water?

what were you planning on putting in there? I don't believe there will be a problem if there's no die off from the rock. I'd personally let it run for a week or two at least and see what the parameters are

When I switched over from my 72 to my 120. I transfered all the water, added new dry sand, LR, sump system, clean unused baserock and still had a small cycle.

Ya there is no way to not have a cycle that I know of. You can do what you are and have a very small and short one though.

I think I'll just wait it out to be safe if I set it up. Now to decide what I want to put in it. HMMMM

I agree there will be a small cycle but shouldnt be as harsh as a full cycle on the creatures.

Blame yamaharider73, they have me wanting to setup a seahorse tank now... with my 20g, as there are a few mated pairs that can go in a 20g.

I've always admired seahorses and wanted to do a set up like that. Seems like a good idea. Seahorses and gorgonians or something. Any threads or where can I get more info and ideas?
