Hello everyone, it has been a long while since I have had a marine tank mainly due to not having time. Any way I purchased from a friend a 80gal bowfront that also game with an eheim model 2215. Since I am disabled and can not work income is very limited, I am looking to set up a reef or have anemones with smaller fish and invertes. My question is what would be a good skimmer, is the filter it came with good to use as long as a remove the bio media?

I apologize for placing this in the wrong board.

Welcome to 3reef. Your filtration can work but it will require a great deal of maintenance compared to a sump. I ran a 36 bow front reef with just a hang on back filter but it was constant maintenance. Pretty much ridiculous. That said filtration has different levels as far as biological, and mechanical then chemical. As long as your filtration can keep up with the current bioload and you can keep up with husbandry then you'll be fine. That said I think it would be better for you to save for better and more efficient filtration than what you have. Can you get started with what you have, yes but it will be much easier on you in the long run to get a proper sump and a skimmer rated above your tank size. Hope that helps a little.
