I am moving all my livestock and fish from one tank to another. I have put new sand in the new tank and a cup of new sand from the old tank. I also put in some live rock from my old tank to the new. I want to use the same refugium from my old tank to my new one. While cycling the new one I threw a wet/dry I had for filtration while cycling. My question is when I transfer everything to the new tank will it be a problem using the old refugium? Also how much water should I use out of the old tank if any? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sparkytj

if it where me moving from 1 tank to another - I assume its a upgrade/ larger tank?
I would use as much water as possible from my existing tank ( taking for granted all parameters are acceptable that is)

if you use all the old water - then I see no problems using the old refugium - using the old water or as much as possible will ensure the life forms in the Fuge are not subjected to the toxic shock that they would be if you used new water

give more details - such as tank size now and intended tank size and the more experienced reefers on here will give you expert guidance

Im going from a 20 gal to a 40. The refugium is a 20 gal as well. I built another 20 gal fuge for the new 40, but hate to loose everything in the old fuge.

    Nice upgrade
you can use all you have now and add to it

This is how I would go about it - but Im sure some of the more experienced reef keepers will have even better ideas

20 gallons of new /imature sea water - being added to a system with livestock in is not ideal - so if you can set up the 40 - with 20 gallons of new water in only - cylce it and then add the contents of your existing 20 to it - that may be a good option

or set up the 40 with the contents of your 20 and run it half filled -and add new water over a gradual period - 2 gallons every other day - so its much like a regular water change in terms of its effects on teh live stock

Ill get out the way now - and let someone who knows better, take over
