Hi all, I am just starting salt water I have a 26 bowfront aquarium. My question is due to the small size of the tank do i need an overflow with sump/fuge or can i just use a canister?

I have a hang on back refugium I can configure but I am thinking if i can get away with no sump that would be preferred. This is for a configuration in my office and space is limitted.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.;D

you should be able to get away with no sump but a skimmer (in this case HOB) would be a good add. looks at CPR skimmers i have read some good post on them.
But take the build slow. its especially important with a smaller aquarium-- less water volume = better chance of param swings.

    +1 on fischkid2

you will be fine with no sump IME
HOB fuge will be a great addition

as would a HOB skimmer IMO ( AquaC remora, SWC and Reef octopus are other Hob skimmers that have many fans in addition to the CPR bak pak as mentioned above)

the cannister could be useful as a means of employing chemical media such as carbon and GFO - I would tend to leave the biological filtration duty to the bacteria on and in the pores of the rock

Thanks for the replies i wasn't sure. I'm going to go ahead and slowly begin to build it up. Once i change up my office i will upgrade it with a sump I just need to build a special stand before i can do that. In the meantime since it sounds fine with what i have i'll go ahead with your recommendations and use the canister/fuge & protein skimmer. I'll keep you all posted as it progresses :)

I just set my tank a up a short while ago. I have no room for a sump. I am using only the berlin method for filtration with no HOB filter and it is working great for me. ...so far.
