Hello, I just got a 55 gallon tank I'm setting it all up now my cycle will probably start within a few days, but I have a list if fish that I have really been interested in and I would like it if you guys could pick some of the best/easiest fish to mix on my list, like who get along the best, eat similar, etc. I am probably just going to start off with a damsel or two but here's my list;D

    Mandarin dragonet*
    Clown*
    Green spotted Puffer
    Flame Angel
    Butterfly
    Snowflake eel*
    Sweet lips*
    Cardinal
    Wrasse
    Cappuccino clown
    Acclimated to salt Columbian shark
    Chocolate chip starfish*
    Kole tang
    Falko hawk fish
    Sand sifter*

I thank you for your help in advanced:)

    get rid of
    green spotted puffer
butterfly (unless its a coral banded butterfly)
    snowflake eel
    sweet lips
chocolate chip starfish (get a linkia)
    falko hawk fish

all of these will stop you from being able to do a reef
which is the best thing for a tank imo =)

The green spotted puffer won't have enough room to turn or really move about in a 55 gallon tank when it's an adult. Think of a 6" football moving about. Puffers also don't get along with shrimp, starfish, crabs, most snails, etc. Pretty much the only thing you can have as a cleanup crew are sandsifting fish and turbo snails. If you do really want a puffer, look into the thinner ones like Valentinis.

Otherwise, pretty much what 1.0reef said. Most of those fish need more space than a 55 even if alone.

EDIT: I've also had good luck with damsels so far, but I've added them in later rather than first. If you get a damsel first, it might start thinking the whole tank is his before you add another fish. Also, some species tend to be more aggressive than others.

Well finalize your list before you decide what to add first :) Go from least aggressive first on up. Clowns, Fairy/Flasher/Pygmy Wrasse, Cardinals, Bassletts, Gobies, Blennies, Dwarf Angelfish, Chromis, Damsels are all sized appropriately for a 55. There are others as well I am sure.

Stay away from the mandarin. You will probably not be able to feed it enough pods to keep it alive. They look great but do not do well in tanks unless you are extremely dedicated to keeping them alive. Also very soon you should be hearing from the tang police. Most people will tell you that a 55 is too small for any tang. They need a lot of room to swim and they will not have enough as they get larger. There are some here that feel as if rehoming is not a viable option. FYI. If you follow the advice above in terms of stocking least to most aggressive, keep in mind to not go too fast. Let your natural bio filtration catch up to each new addition before you add another. Good luck and enjoy!!
