Randy does, I wanna say, 1% water changes daily and has a nice layout for a easy and convienent way to do it. I also want to say Calfo has a thread on RC explaining how to make an automated w/c system!

Dont mean to burst your bubble!;D

I always wanted to do a daily water change but did'nt know how to approach. This is a great idea. Thanks.

All i would need to do is drain a gallon which will force the Autotop off to kick on, then add 1 oz of salt in the baffle area before the bubble trap. This will allow the salt to disolve slowly.

Excellent. Instead of 8 hours on one day. Its just 5 minutes everyday. Much better :)

Yeah I felt like I was a pioneer pitching the idea, then my bubble was bursted when I hear that I was planning on doing it the HARD way, funny isn't it?

Randy Holmes and Anthony Calfo don't know what they're talking about here (if they do recommend 1% daily changes for anything other than large volume tanks with special circumstances/inhabitants). They may have a big following and ReefKeeping magazine/online, but that doesn't make them always right. Maybe they do it because they can afford to waste that much water. Some people that know their scotch better than Calfo knows salt water would recommend drinking the best expensive single malt aged scotch, but that doesn't mean that everyone that drinks scotch has to drink what they recommend.
While 1% daily water changes may be viewed as the most natural and best way to change out water in a tank, I still view it as more wasteful than worthwhile.

If it takes you 8 hours of one day to do your weekly/monthly water change, then you're doing it wrong.

    bad day at work?

No im not, i do it slowly

It takes a while to make 36 gallons of fresh RO/DI water, bring it upto temperature + mix salt, test water and all that.

So next time try pointing that finger in your nose, you will get much better results lol and don't be such a hater..cheer up

    Wow, Boogie! you seem upset!!
Care to enlighten!! I myself would prefer to change MORE than 1% a day, its not the money....WE TOOK these animals into our homes!!!! Its the time I have two small children and no time to make a device or do it manually!!

    Happy researching!!

I like this idea. I think i'm going to start draining about a gallon per day and then letting my ato kick in.................oh gosh i've got so much to think about now.

Just an update. By the method outlined above, I've been faithfully changing about 1.25 gallons per day. After determining how much water I have in my system, I know that I'm changing 100% of my tank water approximately every 74 days.

I'm doing my best to keep fluctuations from wildly swinging; so I'm adding salt, CA, ALK and MG boosters gradually. I want to go slow enough so that no levels climb quickly. My aim is to maintain levels of the above without variance.

My tank completed cycling in late December, and the corals look great, the fish are vibrant and happy, and there is no algal growth of which to speak.

Once I know exactly my levels of depletion for salt, alk, mag, and calcium, I'll develop a routine to add them such that levels are simply maintained.

Sparky--just curious--my tank looses about 1.5 to 2 gallons a day in evaporation anyway-I just keep a 5 gallon jug of ro/di attached to my sump with a float valve. I would figure that your 90 gallon would loose about a gallon a day--depending on your climate. Isn't this the same thing or are you saying because you are removing liquid that you are trying to remove "OLD SALT MIX"--just wondered.
