I have had my tank running for about 7 weeks. Recently, I have noticed a yellowish-brown algae that looks slimy. One end is attached to the LR and the rest floats it also collects bubbles on the very tip. I was wondering if this is just a phase. The books I read with what it looks like, appear to be what was called 'Blue Algae'. I have also started to develop a large amount of light green colored algae covering the sandbed. I was wondering if this is a cause for concern or if it is normal behavior explained in the book. If not, what should I do? Thanks for any advice...

Dont know what it is called. but i had it too at about 7 weeks or so.. Get a clean tooth brush and scrub the rocks and everything. may take 3 or 4 days to get it gone.

It sounds like dinoflaggelates to me... Very normal, esp in the first couple months. At this point you will go through many algaes, diatoms, dinos, cyanobacteria, coralline, hair algae, it all has its time and place. The first nine months or so will have the most nuiscence algae after that(as long as good husbandry and w/c are involved) you are home free to a clean coraline covered tank.

If the problem is one going, there are remedies but at this point w/ a 7 week old tank I would let it ride.

    Good luck and happy reefing!!
