I brought home a new yellow tang juvenile to my aquatic home yesterday and after watching him for a bit noticed some small white specks, about the shape of salt granules on both sides of his body a little splotch on his face and a few on his front fins. I went into Ich panic and started looking everywhere for info and kicking myself for not having a QT setup or a way to get one right now. I bought some Kent's Garlic Extreme and put some in the tank and on tonights food. I have a friend bringing me some Kick Ich invert-safe medication. The weird thing is even before I got the garlic. The little fellow is eating voraciously. Picking at the live rock, ate last nights food cocktail I feed of Mysis, Brine, Algae, and Bloodworms. He is not scratching himself and is not acting lethargic. Do tags maybe have little white dots on them and I mis diagnosed or is he not afflicted badly enough for those symptoms? I have heard mixed reviews of the Kick Ich, invert-safe products. But most positive reviews say the key is to medicate at the early stages and there is a good chance of success. Any other opinions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Could just be stress from the move. IMO, just leave him alone for a couple days, as long as hes eating dont do anything. If in a week or so its still there, then take action. No need to stress it out more.

i agree totally! just keep lots of algae red and green in the tank. also even if it says its safe i dont like adding any harsh treatments to my tank. for my tangs i keep lots of cleaner shrimp on the order of 15 in my 150gal! they get cleaned allot. everyday i see them with shrimp on them! good luck

3 months ago the first fish i put my new tank was a juvi yellow tang, within days it had ich on its fins, he like yours was still a voracious eater, he did however itch himself alot, i did one treatment of the water with Ich Attack, did a 10% water change and then left the tank alone. Within 1-2 weeks after that he was 100% ich free, one thing i kinda noticed in this is that whatever you do its going to take time to get rid of it. Even when i treated the water i didnt notice anything different right away and his eating habits etc stayed the same. I say treat the water, do a water change and leave it alone, watching the tang closely. Mine pulled through and is a happy camper now and hasnt had ich since. Whether he got it from stress (which is most likely the case) or anything else, it just took some time. Hope this helps.

Well I forgot to mention I also have a Skunk cleaner shrimp and many other inverts. But I just read a horrible story on another forum from a guy who sounded like he knew what he was talking about. I hope this goes well. I have to setup a QT for new fish. I was worried about it but was actually talked out of it by my LFS. He has either been very lucky or he knew this would happen and just wanted me to buy more fish.

Dude, I have never quarantined a fish in my life. I think the stress of putting a tang in a 20 gallon qt tank is way worse than putting him in the display where most of my fish are healthy and have an immune system strong enough to protect them.

all I can add onto the above comments made by previous posters, is agreement

a healthy fish, with a good appetite , can in a large % of cases fight off this infection and build up its immunity system and prevents future attacks

I use Garlic extract with every feeding - its a good appetite stimulator

I don't want to lose the tang, but I fear a pandemic worse. He has 4 Fish tank mates. 1 shrimp. 4 different starfish and many other inverts of the crab, snail variety. I am hoping for a recovery if it is Ich.

Day 3 of Garlic treatment. Tang is still not Scratching or lethargic. Eating algae from all over the Tank. Eating at feeding time too. No Labored breathing. And most importantly no White spots on other fish. Fingers crossed.
