They will have different calibration scales in them, buy one specifically for salt water.

Wave Motion Return Pumps 400-800 TAAM/RIO - eBay (item 290353753287 end time Jul-23-10 10:10:05 PDT)

Aquarium Plumbing & Wavemakers: Switching Current Water Director (SCWD)

there you go, just make sure you got a big enough in-sump pump thats a good brand. most people like the mag pumps. there are others though. for powerheads I use maxijet 600 and sureflow mods on them. I get 1400gph with only 8 watts of power and cost about $30-35 for both.

Hey y'all, I'm real new to the saltwater business I ran a freshwater tank for a while. I'm looking to obtain a larger tank because I have such a small tank 20Gal. I am looking for a good place to start, I'm looking at starting a fish only tank and maybe after a year or two branching out from there.

One of the things I need help picking out is a HOB filter that is very quiet. I'm placing my tank in my bed room and wish to get some sleep, I understand that most filters make noise when the water level drops.

Also what is a reasonable lighting system to get, remember I'm currently only doing a fish only tank, no corals no inverts, etc,.

If anyone has any ideas for me I'm very open to suggestions and advice.

well a 55g tank are on sale at petco for $55 for starters. theres a few different types of hob filters, some have media trays, bio wheels, built-in skimmer,etc.. if i was going to get a hob filter, i would try one of these:
Power Filter: Bio System Power Filter & Surface Skimmer from Foster & Smith Aquatics

It has a surface skimmer built-into the unit, which is a nice feature.

As someone suggested you want to have your return line as high up as possible so that you have a siphon break if the power goes out. That is something that should be fix asap.
