    Hi everyone

Great site, and certainly glad i found it before it was to late.

I decided to start a tank about 2 months ago , i had a fowlr tank in the 80s, so bought all the equipment to set it it,

bought a 110g tank, crushed coral, hang on filter, seaclone skimmer(which actually is a huge upgrade from the skimmers of the 80s with an airstone only) ug filter, a couple power heads, threw a few minows in it to cycle, after a month of running took the wife to the fish store, she loved the coral, so i wanted to research it before getting any,
thats how i found this site

boy did things change, needless to say i had to start all over.

so today i took out all the crushed coral,ug plate, power heads, and hang on filter.

i have 2 1400 wavemaker power heads circulating tank.

im waiting on the 160lb sand from macrorock (not sure if its enough, any sugggestion)

bought last night and waiting for

Reef Octopus BH 2000 Hang on Back Protein Skimmer from aquacave

    48" Metal Halide 2 x 250 ,4 t5ho actinics , 6 led lunars odeysea brand from ebay

30 and 10 lbs of live sand from 2 differant places , to seed sand from macro.

my local fish store is an hour away, so the net is a better option for all my needs.

after i get all that in was going to order

20 lbs of Primo Deco Florida Live Rock coral AQUARIUMS

from ebay to hopefully seed the 200lbs of deadrock i have

i saved the crush coral, maybe to make some deadrock, seen a few ways on the net, would like to try it out.

well wish me luck, maybe in a few months i may have a fish in there :)

    any help would be great

if your tank is 48 long by 24 wide then 160 pounds will give you about a 3.5" sand bed, hope this helps! :) good luck with your tank and welcome to 3reef!

    48 x 18 x 30 high , so guessing it should be 4 inches

from what I was told all the good bacteria and stuff isn't free swimming, its on the rocks and sand. But idk if using the existing water has any benefits or drawbacks, I'm sure someone else will help out. Was it tap or RO/DI water?

I didn't read anything about a sump, it's relatively cheap to make one and it's a good place to hide all that equipment so it's not in the display tank (Skimmer, any media reactors you might get in the future, heater, etc)

But it sounds like you did your research and went on a heck of a shopping spree - have fun! Get some pictures posted of the progress. Oh and welcome to 3reef - there's a ton of smart people who help us along the way :p

it is RO/DI water and dont have a sump. i have a double stand with a 110 on top of a 90 ,so no room for it.but right now have nothing more than 110 gllons of water cirulating with 2 pumps, and waiting on the sand to get here, and wasnt sure since that water was in the tank since day 1 ,2months ago if i should just dain that as well and start with frest water
